5D's review of the Grrrrrrreat KD-7000  Aug 25, 2010
I love it. It's about 3 inches taller than my last excellent scale which went to electronic heaven a couple of weeks ago. The lift up cover can be a pain - I know it's removable, but where oh where do you keep all the extra stuff that might be used again someday? The tare feature really comes in handy for adding all the ingredients of the recipes that I make. As other reviews have said the start up time is a little slow - relatively speaking, but so am I.

5Dead On!  Aug 24, 2010
This is 100% dead on calibrated from the factory! I tested 6 different items and everything was too accurate. But what passed the test was weighing sticks of butter. Those weigh 4 ounces and exactly weigh that, so I am impressed as well as trust it. Very well made, sturdy, and very professional looking in the kitchen. It also has the most features for the price, it weighs in many different measurement types. A must buy!

1Really wanted to like this scale...  Aug 11, 2010
Do Not Waste Your Money On This Scale:

I should really do a video to show how dreadfully inaccurate this scale is. I weigh ingredients down to the gram, and unless the scale is on an ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY LEVEL SURFACE, it will not give an accurate result. Although the scale itself indicates it's level and ready to work, it fails - every time. Even when you believe it's solidly set on a counter, etc., and zeroed out, you can watch the weight of your ingredient move up, finally settling on some way off reading. Taking the same quantity of ingredient and reweighing yields a completely different result - every time. One could say it's consistent: consistently inaccurate.

I recommend instead the Jennings CJ-4000 scale (sorry, I love Amazon, but they don't carry this model; go to [...]). It's very sturdy, and weighs *accurately* down to 0.5 gram (better resolution than the MyWeigh) and up to about 8 pounds. Unfortunately the one I had suffered at the hands of someone who plopped something heavy on top of it, and I thought I'd try the MyWeigh based on all the good reviews. I'd return the MyWeigh, but the seller will only give a fraction of the cost back, so it'll just get donated. What a waste. I'm reordering the Jennings today.

5KD7000 Review: Used in manufacuring lab.  May 21, 2010
I have tried buying many electronic balances that have not had Mettler/Ohaus price tags. Some have been silly, like the one that automatically locks the reading by freezing the display. Some have simply stopped working when the box is opened.

The KD7000, supplied with disosable splash shields as well as the removable swing-down Lexan one, is well designed, stable, with accesible options such as idle time shutoff. I verified the accuracy with my weight set (NBS Tracable) and found it within published limits. Naturally, no inexpensive 7kG balance is going to weigh milligrams. The blue LED backlighting can be turned off on the LCD display to conserve the battery.

This is a serious tool, not a toy, not a "Use and discard" cheap thing. Superb design, response time can be changed, and well built. I look forward to years of use.

The use environment is a manufacturing lab, where it is used to make prototype-size batches of polymers for composite applications as well as custom formulations for other products. Avoid contact with acetone and other solvents, of course, as the plastic LCD cover could become clouded.

1Do -not- buy this  Feb 19, 2010
I'm a constant home baker, and I needed a new scale, so I picked this one because the specs looked pretty good and it was a decent price. So, I take it out of the package, I'm looking at it, pull up the plastic cover and it breaks off. Not a great start, but hey, I didn't really need the cover anyway and maybe it was just my fault. Also once you get it in person, you realize that almost the whole thing is made out of cheap plastic. The picture they have makes it look metallic and shiny, but no, it's plastic and feels like it would shatter into pieces if you ever dropped it. And the stainless steel top piece is only a thin piece of metal over more cheap plastic. But my real problem came when I tested it out. No matter how heavy the thing you're weighing, it's almost always wildly inaccurate. When I measure ounces, it's easily off by 3-4. When I measure pounds, it's still off by 2-3 pounds. Simply lifting up the item and re-placing it in the same spot can wildly change the weight. And if you move it into a different spot on the scale, once again, wildly different results. After a couple of tries I've found this ugly paperweight to be completely useless for any kind of cooking, compared to the much more accurate option of simply guessing.
